Creative Prompt:
Different Ways of Looking
How do you see yourself?
How do other people see you?
Warm-up Prompt for Creative Thinking
By reflecting on music, paintings, sculpture and poetry, we can open our minds to new ideas, to creative ways of thinking about the project, challenge, or question ahead.
Different Looks
Many parts make a whole. People are made up of all their parts—personality traits, roles, strengths and weaknesses, experiences, emotions, etc. Add in the views others have of a person, and you’ll see a kaleidoscope of qualities that make up who they are, and who they can become.
Take a close look at the Picasso painting, Head of a Woman with Hat. Notice the colors and distinct facial features of the painting, and reflect on what you see.
What unique parts of yourself do you see reflected in the shapes, colors, and angles of this portrait?
Think about your own shapes, colors and angles. If each distinct section - the eyes, the nose, the mouth, the ears, the hat, the hair - in this painting represented a voice or perspective within you, what might each one be trying to say?
Now, imagine you’re someone else. Be specific - name a name. If each section of this painting represented that person’s voice, what might they want to tell you about yourself?
Jot down the words and phrases that come to mind, and look back at the list throughout the day. What do the words tell you? What do you need to know?
