A kaleidoscope is toy shaped like a tube, with mirrors and colored shapes. The name comes from Greek words meaning "beautiful form viewer." Have you ever looked into one? Each time you rotate the kaleidoscope, you see a new pattern or design.

IN THIS LESSON Look into the kaleidoscope and start understanding the many ways people at a similar place in life might see you.

Optional Creative Prompt (Opens in a New Window)
  1. Think of a person - a friend or colleague - someone you trust and respect.

  2. Who is it? Take a minute to close your eyes and bring that person to life in your mind. Picture them as if they were with you right now. Notice their features, their hair, their face, their clothes, their expressions. Where do they sit at work? When do you typically interact?

  3. For each of the following prompts, add the descriptive words you come up with to your self-portrait page.

    • Think about when you met this person. What aspects of their personality led you to trust them?

    • If that person introduced you to someone new, what descriptive words would they use to explain who you are?

    • If that person were to recommend you for a new position, what position would that be?

    • Overall, what words would they use to describe you?

  4. If you asked that person for frank feedback on areas where you could improve, based on their point of view, imagine what they would say. Add these words to your self-portrait.
